Teachers’ Day is a day celebrated to honor Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the First Vice President and second President of India. It is celebrated every year on 5th September, the birthday of Dr. Radhakrishnan.
Why is Teachers’ Day Celebrated?
Apart from being a statesman, Dr. Radhakrishnan was also a great philosopher and academician. He taught in many prestigious universities of India and was widely popular among the students, who loved and respected him.
Dr. Radhakrishnan had always said that he is a teacher first then anything else. He immensely enjoyed reading and teaching as well. Therefore to honour his teaching skills, we celebrate Teachers’ Day on his birthday.
Story behind Teachers’ Day
There is a very interesting story behind the beginning of Teachers’ Day. In 1962, when Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was in office as the second President of India, he was interacting with some of his older students.
With an intention to honour him, the students sought his permission to celebrate his birthday, which falls on 5th September. Being a simple and down to earth person, Dr. Radhakrishnan rejected the proposal as he didn’t like the idea of glamorizing himself. But to not dishearten his students he asked them to celebrate his birthday as Teachers’ Day instead. This way he said that they will be honoring the teachers for their contribution to the society and the students.
Thus began the tradition of celebrating Teachers’ Day every year on 5th September.
Teachers’ Day Celebration
Teachers’ Day is celebrated in the political as well as the social circles of India. The day is of political significance because it commemorates the birthday of first Vice President and also the second President of India. Prime Minister and senior cabinet ministers as well as leaders of opposition, pay their homage to Dr. Radhakrishnan.
However, the celebrations are more relevant with the teaching abilities of Dr. Radhakrishnan. Children observe his birthday with enthusiasm and zeal. They show a tremendous mark of respect and love for their teachers. Schools celebrate Teachers’ Day like a festival. Usually, it is a day off from routine classes for the children and teachers. Children give surprises and gifts to their teachers as a token for their love and respect.
They also organize several plays and events to entertain their teachers. Dance performances, best teachers prize distribution and similar events are held in the schools and colleges.
The society also comes forward to respect the teachers for their commendable services. Teachers who have done exceptional work are honoured in special events organized by societies and relevant organizations.

Teachers’ Day is a day for the society to honor the teachers for being the mentors and guardians of the society and its children. The day celebrates the never-dying spirit of the teachers to selflessly serve society.
