Onam Festival Essay For Class 4

Introduction

Onam festival is celebrated in the state of Kerala. It is a harvest festival that welcomes King Mahabali.

My Favourite Festival Onam

It is believed that on this day King Mahabali visits our state of Kerala. Onam is celebrated for 10 days and each day has its own significance.

The first day of Onam is when King Mahabali is believed to visit Kerala. It is like celebrating his homecoming.

Mothers and sisters decorate their homes with yellow flowers called Pookalam, on the first day.

On the second-day people clean their houses and add a fresh layer of flowers to the Pookalam.

The third day is celebrated by Onakodi – the exchange of gifts among family and friends.

Now comes the fourth and the most auspicious day. On this day Onam Sadhya is prepared. Sadhya is a delicious vegetarian meal prepared in the houses.

On the fifth day of Onam, a boat race is held on River Pamba in Pathanamthitta. In Kerala, it is known as the Vallamkali boat race while to the rest of the country it is the ‘Snake boat race’.

On the sixth day, schools observe holidays while the children prepare for prayers.

On day seven, dances are performed throughout the states.

On the eighth day of Onam, the Pookalam again becomes the center of attraction. People clean and place the idols of Vamana and King Mahabali in the center of Pookalam.

On day nine of Onam, people buy fruits and vegetables and prepare traditional meals.

On the tenth and last day of the Onam, the festival concludes with the exchange of gifts and offering prayers. Also, on this day a special feast called Thiruvona Sadya is prepared in the houses.

Conclusion

Onam is my favorite festival that I enjoy a lot with my family and friends. I wait for the whole year for Onam. I love the celebration and the food as well. I love to give speeches on Onam in English as well.

Onam Welcome Speech In English

Honorable teachers, respected guests, and my dear friends. It is a proud privilege to address you all to mark the festival of Onam.

Onam is the biggest and most special festival of Kerala celebrated every year with unparallel grandeur.

Though the pandemic has dampened the celebrations to an extent, nevertheless, in our spirits the joy of Onam still prevails as in previous years.

It reminds us of the ancient legend of Vamana and King Mahabali. It also reminds us of a time when non-discrimination and equality prevailed.

People were not only happy and prosperous but they also maintained high moral standards. There was hardly any lie, falsehood, and deception in the society.

Therefore, the festival reminds us of those days and teaches us to strive for the same just and equal society as the one ruled by King Mahabali.

Thank You!!
