Family and Education

Sania Mirza was born on 15th November 1986 in Mumbai. Her father Imran Mirza was working as a sports journalist and mother Naseema worked at a printing business.

After Sania’s birth, the family moved to the city of Hyderabad where the originally belonged. Sania’s parents had their second daughter in Hyderabad who was named ‘Anam’.

Sania attended Nasr School in Hyderabad which she had called her second home she still misses. Later, Sania graduated from St. Mary’s college’ Hyderabad.

Sania’s Tennis Debut

Sania began playing tennis at an early age of six. Her father who was a sports journalist coached her during childhood. Sania has also credited Nasr School where she did schooling, for allowing and encouraging her to pursue her tennis dream.

Sania’s debut in tennis was in April 2001, on the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Circuit when she was aged just 15. She reached up to quarter finals in Pune and semi finals in Delhi.  

Aged only 16 years in 2002, Sania had won 10 singles and 13 double titles also winning the 2003 Wimbledon Championships Girls’ doubles; prior to that she had reached the quarter finals of 2002 US Open Girls’ doubles.

Sania Mirza is married to Pakistani cricket player Shoaib Malik since 2010. She was also briefly engaged to her childhood friend Sohrab Mirza in 2009 but the tie was called off.

Sania’s marriage with Shoaib was solemnized by a ‘mahr’ of Rs. 6.1 million.

In October 2018, Sania gave birth to a baby boy and the couple named him Izhaan Mirza Malik.
